Web Developer

The Role
Redtail has built and collect data from hundreds of thousands of telematics and IoT devices, each of which regularly sends in data. This is converted to useful information for (in the main) fleet managers and insurers so they can help drivers be safer and kinder to the environment. Your role will be building our web portals to show the data as useful information and presenting it in a way that inspires action.
We mainly use a Microsoft stack (C# and .NET Core hosted in Azure) server-side and various JavaScript libraries on the client, but we value someone who understands the principles of software development and enthusiastically contributes their own ideas over expertise with any particular technology. Many devices mean a lot of data, so we use a combined approach of relational and non-relational storage technology to store data in the right way.
As a key member of a small company providing telematics and IoT services to insurance companies, fleet managers and stolen vehicle recovery companies worldwide, you will see your work deployed quickly and will also get to work with customers to ensure key requirements are met. We use Scrum to coordinate development, typically with fortnightly iterations. Developers are also provided with a Pluralsight subscription and encouraged to attend developer events so they can bring ideas from peers in other industries to the team.
Main responsibilities of the role
- Design and construct web application solutions to planned business and product requirements such as crash reconstruction, insurance fraud detection, driver scoring visualisation, location tracking, fleet reporting, etc.
- Provide users with an attractive, highly usable web portal interface.
- Actively participate in sprint planning, retrospectives, and reviews to ensure the highest of standards are applied to systems development.
- Evangelise best-practice methods for web application development.
- Identify and evaluate technical debt and promote resolutions.
- Work with Redtail’s app developers to ensure a consistent user experience across platforms
- Mentoring of junior staff in “the Redtail way”.
Technical Skills & Experience
Essential
- Comprehensive understanding of the full stack software development lifecycle with C#, .Net, MVC, Azure (or other similar cloud services), SQL and Cosmos technologies, source code repositories, and deployment methods with specific skills building customer facing web portals.
- Able to produce high quality, scalable, cohesive, testable, and readily deployable source code to defined functional, performance and security specifications and patterns.
- Able to visualise location and event time series data into actionable information.
- Able to design and build excellent web user experiences.
Desirable
- Experience of systems with high transaction rate relational and document databases ingesting real time data from IoT devices.
- Able to define and develop middle-layer components (Business logic, APIs, Controllers).
- Able to develop back-end data ingestion and processing systems using heuristic and machine learning methods.
- Understanding of hardware state-machines and communication protocols.
- Experience with lossless and lossy processing of data.
Personal skills and attributes
- First-class interpersonal skills with an open and collaborative approach.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Enthusiastic, inspiring and open-minded attitude.
- Agile and efficient approach, highly adaptable to changing circumstances.
- Creative with the ability to bring innovative ideas.
- Self-starter able to work on own initiative and take ownership of work.
